Kenties yksi oudoimmista ja täten jännittävimmistä pyöriin liittyvistä materiaaleista on Kerria Lacca -hyönteisten munakoteloidensa suojaksi erittämästä aineesta valmistettu orgaaninen muovi jota kutsutaan sellakaksi. Sellakkaa käytetään nykyään pääasiallisesti huonekalujen pintakäsittelyyn ja elintarvikkeiden, esimerkiksi karkkien, lisäaineena. Polkupyöriin se liittyy siten että viime vuosisadan alkupuoliskolla sitä käytettiin etenkin Ranskassa puuvillasta valmistettujen tankonauhojen pintakäsittelyyn.Ennen muovien laajamittaista käyttöönottoa puuvillanauha oli yksi yleisimmistä tavoista päällystää metallinen ohjaustanko, ja nauhat saatettiin lakata kulutus- ja vedenkestävyyden lisäämiseksi, operaation antamaa mielenkiintoisen näköistä kiiltävää ulkonäköä väheksymättä.
